Walking Tour of Duncan Totem Poles

The Bringing Light To The World totem pole was carved in 1994 by Richard Krentz. It stands 6.1m (20′) in height and is displayed on Station Street outside the Judy Hill Gallery at 22 Station Street. It depicts three figures: the Raven, the Killer Whale and the Bear.

The Bringing Light To The World pole was co-sponsored by Judy Hill and the Gendemann family.

Carver Richard Krentz describes the meaning of the Bringing Light To The World pole as:

“The Raven in our culture is seen as someone that brought light to the world. The Killer Whale means those who travel together. The Bear is seen as the supplier of our physical needs. It is always at the bottom of the poles; it holds everything up. It is like our body is the strength and it comes from the Bear.”
